Plus the brand is a little heavy on resources for my liking. People tend not to forget these things for years, if ever. I'm positive that many IT personnel were working overnight changing security brands that very night. Time is money in the business/corporate world, I'm positive that some were looking for other solutions while McAfee had their thumbs up their butts & by the next day, many had changed brands. That brand ruined themselves a couple of years ago, with the infamous update that knocked millions of computers (mostly business users) out for the day. No doubt, you done yourself a huge favor by removing McAfee antivirus. Downloaded & installed the original one from their site, it worked perfectly. The one that didn't work, the OEM (HP) had the wrong driver installed. I've had it to go both ways with new computers. On new ones, such as yours, it should have worked out of the box, sometimes it just doesn't. It will be a nice upgrade, like the "N" was to the "G", 10+ x better & WiMax compatible. "AC" is the new standard, but it's going to take a year or so to drop in price. Or if the older one is easily accessible, replace it with a modern one. Many times, on older notebooks, one can grab a USB "N-300" adapter at a reasonable price & it works better than what's installed. What I don't have patience with is older wireless cards (those "G" type ones). Sometimes, networking issues can drive one up the wall, I've seen plenty of threads on them, on every tech forum that I've been a part of. With networking, the chances that it applies to you are greater than a BIOS update is. Normally, firmware updates, like BIOS updates, are to address a particular issue or issues. Still, it's best to update the firmware if offered, normally they perform better & are more secure.

If you have another computer that does connect, or the one that you have did prior to installing Windows 8, it's OK. And what about Windows 8? Did you upgrade, clean install or buy a new computer with Windows 8 pre-installed?Īs long as your router is working, even with older firmware, that in itself wouldn't prevent you from connecting. Have you tried running the troubleshooter?Ĭan you please return with your system specs, including the wi-fi card brand & model? This would help a lot. Some cards just doesn't work with Windows 8. It didn't for my desktop, however I'm running Ethernet anyway, it came with a built in Atheros AR5007EG wireless card that works with Windows 7, but not 8.

Have you checked for updates with your Wi-Fi? This may or may not help.
